Wedding: Cherry Blossom

The theme flower for this wedding was red cherry blossom. When the cake was set up, I took a few steps back to take in the overall look of the banquet room. The cherry blossom wedding cake against the backdrop was quite stunning.

Year of the Tiger

In four weeks, people of Chinese descents from all over the world will be ushering in the Year of the Tiger. Sounds of firecrackers will fill the air, hong bao (lucky packets) will be given to children, family and friends will visit each other. As is the custom during the Chinese New Year, visitors will bring gifts with auspicious meanings, tangerines which name in the Cantonese dialect sounds like gold, to wish their hosts prosperity. Groundnuts, which sounds like “live” in the Cantonese dialect to wish longevity, etc. I have put together some auspicious elements in this cake design for the Chinese New Year.

For the cake to be extra special, it will be packed in this gift box. This design is also suitable as corporate gifts.

Dino Island for Ceevan

Ceevan loves Dinosaurs as with most boys his age.  I was glad to have the opportunity to make another dinosaur cake, especially one where Ceevan gets to keep the dinosaurs to play with later.

The water around this island is treacherous. On the island, only the fittest will survive. Most of my cake designs are decorated with fondant but in this case, buttercream worked best to recreate the landscape and the sea.

Fire Engine for Capt Kaelen

I made this fire engine a couple of months back for a special little boy who turned 7. “Captain Kaelen” is allergic to eggs, so his cake was to be made with an eggless recipe.

Rediffusion Announcer

When I was little, I took the little square box mounted on a wall in the dining room of my uncle’s house for granted. All day, there will be radio drama, Chinese opera, songs and story telling from the little square box. This little black was was an alternative to the radio, the cable radio station Rediffusion.

Birthday girl, Anna, was an announcer with Rediffusion in the 1960’s. According to her daughter, Ann, this cake brought back a lot of memories for her.

A big hit in 1965 was “Help!” by the Beatles. Elvis was also a popular choice. On the turntable is Petula Clark’s “Downtown”.

My husband was also an announcer with Rediffusion in the 60’s. He was the technical advisor for the design of the console. Yes, the console was that plain. This was the 1960’s before stereo sound, equalizer, digital sound etc!

I have had to turn down orders lately due to overwhelming response to Mama Min cakes. Thank you very much for your enquiries and for your support. Mama Min will be moving to new, better premises in the near future and I am currently putting together a dream team to work together to make more beautiful cakes. Workshops on cakes, pastries and various baked goods will be conducted in the new Mama Min shop!

Garden of virtues

Throughout our lives, we meet many people some of whom become a big influence in our lives. Karen is one such person. When I heard that her birthday was coming up, I wanted to make her a special cake which reflected her importance to me. This design made me think of the many virtues she has shown me and others whose lives she touched and how she has “grown” these virtues in us. That’s why I thought of a garden themed cake.

Bollywood 21st birthday

Cake was for a surprise 21st birthday party and the theme was Bollywood. The design I thought of was to be colourful, over-the-top and pretty.

Cupcakes: Pucca

Every 9-year-old girl seems to have a fascination for Pucca. Ok, maybe it’s just Jia Jia and my daughter. I must admit I find Pucca and the other characters in the cartoon quite cute and they’re definitely dream faces to make for cupcakes.

Cupcakes: Distant Love

I received a call on a weekend from a lady who wanted to send her love some cupcakes.   She is away from her love at the moment. I was already full for that weekend but she sounded so disappointed when i said no…

The design is based on their nickname for each other and on the cupcakes was the message for her love.

There was a bit of drama when I wanted to deliver the cupcakes. My husband had taken my car and his car key along with him. I was left with his car but no keys! Taxis sometimes refuse to come up to my place which is quite secluded. Fortunately, I managed to get one. The drive to deliver the cupcakes was quite long. Fortunately, the taxi driver was quite chatty. We had a nice chat all the way and got the cupcakes delivered safely.
